Centralised control and instrument are required in machinery
spaces. Engineer can be called to machinery space in emergency and control must
be easily reached and fully comprehensive
Automatic fire detection system. Alarm and detection system must be
operational rapidly. Numerous well sited and quick response detectors must be
fitted.
Fire extinguishing system. In addition to conventional hand
extinguishers a control fire station remote from the machinery space is
essential. The station must have control for emergency pump, valves,
ventilator, extinguishing media. Etc.
Alarm system.
A comprehensive machinery alarm system must be provided for
control and accommodation area.
Automatic bilge high level alarm and pumping unit sensing
device in bilges with alarm and hand or automatic pump cut in devices must be
provided.
Automatic emergency generator
starting to give protection against black out condition.
Local hand control of essential
machineries.
In case of irretrievable fire alarm.
Revert to watch keeping of engine room,
Ensure at least two people are present for watch keeping.
Frequent fire rounds in engine room spaces.
Identify high risk areas and keep hoses ready and ensure
proper house keeping.
Ensure high temperature alarm are
connected.
Ensure proper stowage of chemicals and lube oil containers.
Remove all sources of spontaneous ignition like oily rags.
Identify exhaust gas leakages if any and ensure constant
surveillance.
